About the project
The bullying phenomenon is a multidimensional problem affecting many aspects of the social life of young people in and out of the school premises. A characteristic of all youngsters and especially teenagers is an aggressive behavior which is displayed in public, places like school, games arena (football, basketball), but out in the streets as well. In order to eliminate the worrying impact and consequences of this phenomenon we must address the root causes that are linked to its development and perpetuation. And the best way to do this is to reach the schools and especially pedagogues (teachers, trainers, tutors, mentors) who are in close communication and relationship with children that are most likely to display aggressive behaviors at an early stage of their lives and socialization with others.
The purpose of this survey will help schools to make a brief assessment about the following:
- The nature and extent to which bullying is occurring in a school;
- How children have reacted to bullying at school and what have been the consequences for their feelings of safety and well-being;
- Whether they have informed others and to what outcomes;
- Students' perceptions of their own aggressive behaviors at school;
- Gender differences regarding all of the above.
Objectives
School violence is a community issue. Research shows that communities with higher rates of violence (domestic violence, assaults, etc.) report higher frequencies of "school violence". If we accept the premise that schools are a reflection of their communities then we must realize that schools alone can not resolve the bullying issue. We need to promote the idea that there are multiple stakeholders involved in this issue and we are all in this together.
Bullying among primary school age children has become recognized as an antecedent to more violent behavior in later grades. Statistics on violence in our country tell a grim story with a clear message. Action is needed to end purposeful harassment, and bullying. The studies that have been done on the issue of bullying in our partnership will contribute to a growing body of knowledge that underscores the seriousness of the problem of bullying in schools. The following is a list of facts based on the current research about bullying:
• 80% of adolescents reported being bullied during their school years
• 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims
• 15% of students bully regularly or are victims of bullies
• Up to 7% of 8th grade students stay home at least once a month because of bullies
• Bullies identified by age eight are six times more likely to be convicted of a crime by age twenty-four and five times more likely that non-bullies to end up with serious criminal records by the age of thirty.
• Students reported that 71% of the teachers or other adults in the classroom ignored bullying incidents.
Adult behavior is crucial to the success of any anti-bullying initiative. Partnership should be understood in a broad sense as work strategies and approaches to promote Bullying phenomena and social cohesion and deal with or overcome situations of social exclusion, marginalization or isolation. The leaders of the project should be youth.
In designing the project we recognize that in Europe we should understand the bullying phenomenon in an active way, all we need to learn to be represented and to feel represented with their differences and similarities, their own culture and values. The projects aim is also to improve counselling skills in order to be more sensitive and aware of our attitude and communication in positive way.
All partners involved in this project will analyze in depth critical issues relevant to bullying phenomena at all levels of education, with concrete conclusions and recommendations, selecting cases of good practice showed European experiences that could be disseminated and transferred to other countries, specially in training with teachers. But more generally, the various experiences presented have provided ideas and possible solutions to serve as an inspiration to stakeholders across Europe.
Schools will give practical support and incentives to encourage take-up of bullying programmes, integrating bullying concept across different courses. They will develop networks that can share good practice. Cooperation between educational establishments and the local community should be encouraged.
Objectives of the project are:
• To promote between teachers, managers and students the discussion on the “bullying issue” in the schools.
• To provide psychological, pedagogic and sociological competencies, to fight the bullying phenomenon.
• To encourage and to promote a comparison to an international level that could define the problematic dimension of the phenomenon as well as its range.
• To encourage the creation of a group of study and intervention (peer counselling) to research solutions and strategies of intervention.
• To create an Anti-bullying Campaign in the context to stop violence.
• To promote the acquisition of knowledge’s for students to intervene respecting people's safety in defense of the victims but also against a macro-phenomenon of large dimension.
Bullying can occur in any setting where human beings interact with each other. This includes school, the workplace, home and neighborhoods. Bullying can exist between social groups, social classes and even between countries. We intend to create a network between schools, working to stop bullying, using varied experience and perspectives. We will promote methods for developing the individual’s ability to search for information and to develop knowledge actively and independently. We’lll work together to stem the incidence of bullying, creating a Campaign against Bullying.
In a learning process, we will provide guidance which encourages persons to be protagonists in their own life. Focus areas: basic skills in communication and cooperation, active citizenship, counselling skills as basis for improving life. Subjects:
•What is bullying? Introduction to the phenomenon - conflicts with students, adults, demonstrations of the bullying, direct/indirect form, the bully, the victim, the involved figures, factors of risk, factors of protection, bullying in school, places at risk, role of the education.
• Bullying: the role of the educational actors- role of the school, dynamics in the classroom, subjects at risk, differential diagnosis, signals, the educators' role, role of the empathy, moral development, purpose of the prevention. Bullying as a preview of the vandalism, strategies against bullying, peer counselling.
Over the two year period, partners will exchange ideas and try out new strategies and tactics to improve their own organization’s adult learner retention rates. The findings of the two year research project will be disseminated through publications and web sites.
